South African tenor Thando Mjandana was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Anniversary Company at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and a graduate of the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the University of Cape Town Opera School.
Thando’s 22/23 season include Policeman 1 & Congregant 1/Blue (Dutch National Opera); Tamino/The Magic Flute (WNO) and Acis/Acis & Galatea and Sailor/Dido & Aeneas (Waterperry Opera Festival).
Recent highlights include Caliban in the world premiere performance of Haas’ Sycorax (Konzert Theater Bern); Messenger/Theodora, Philistine Messenger/Samson et Dalila, Noble of Brabant/Lohengrin and Gastone de Letorières/ La traviata (all at the Royal Opera House); Nemorino/L’elisir d’amore (Waterperry Opera Festival); Nelson and Crab Man/Porgy and Bess (Dutch National Opera); Nelson/Porgy and Bess (ENO); Tamino/The Magic Flute (Cape Town Opera); and Beppe in Donizetti’s Rita, Renzo in Jonathan Dove’s The Little Green Swallow, Historicus in Carissimi’s Judicium Salomonis, Ixion in Charpentier’s Orphée descendant aux enfers, and François in Amy Crankshaw’s The Apothecary (Guildhall School of Music & Drama).
Thando was also named the winner of the Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Award at the Voice of Black Opera Competition 2023.
