Rebecca Afonwy-Jones

Mezzo-soprano

Born in Mid Wales, Rebecca Afonwy-Jones began her career as a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist making her debut in the title role of Carmen, subsequently joining Welsh National Opera as an Associate Artist.

Other companies with whom she has worked include English Touring Opera, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera North, West Green House Opera and Festival Opera, New Zealand. 

She made her BBC Proms debut singing Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and concert engagements have further included performances with Britten Sinfonia, Norwegian Wind Ensemble, London Mozart Players, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.

Her recordings include Stian Aareskjold’s arrangement of Messiah, Joseph Phibbs’ Juliana and Hugh Wood’s Beginnings, all available on Resonus Classics, the last selected as a Sunday Times CD of the Week. 

She appeared in the premiere of The Sky Engine, a new community oratorio by Richard Peat and Timothy Knapman at JAM on the Marsh and during Autumn 2023 joined If Opera Company to sing Dimitri Fedora, Mum / Mad Hatter Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Marthe Iolanta. Her current engagements further include Dama Macbeth for Mid Wales Opera, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Elgar The Kingdom at Three Choirs Festival.

Rebecca Afonwy-Jones is delighted to be returning to Longborough Festival Opera.
