Philip Sheffield

Philip Sheffield’s career has taken him all over the world from Covent Garden to Buenos Aires, Milan, New York and Tokyo. He studied English Literature at Cambridge University and vocal studies at the Royal College of Music. He started his singing career as a member of “The Swingle Singers” and made his operatic debut in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo under Roger Norrington. He was then invited to La Monnaie for L’incoronazione di Poppea which led to further engagements in Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany.

Career highlights include Pelléas/Pelléas et Mélisande (Opéra Comique); Tom Rakewell/The Rake’s Progress (La Monnaie); and Alonso in Thomas Adès’ The Tempest (Opéra national du Rhin). He has sung many Mozart roles including Tamino, Ferrando, Belmonte and Don Ottavio, but is now more often heard in Britten, Janáček and contemporary operas. I recent seasons he has performed Reverend Horace Adams/Peter Grimes (Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Oper Köln); Edward IV in the Italian premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s Richard III (Teatro La Fenice); and Živný/Osud (Janáček Festival Brno).
