Karolina Sofulak

Director

Karolina is the first-prize winner of the 10th Europäischer Opernregie-Preis organized by Camerata Nuova and Opera Europa (2018) and a finalist of the Independent Opera Fellowship at Sadler’s Wells (2015). She holds an MA (with Distinction) in West European Language and Culture Studies from the University of Warsaw. 

She trained in Opera and Musical Theatre Directing at the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts and the Academy of Music in Kraków. Directing credits include: Un ballo in maschera (The Royal Danish Opera, Oslo Opera), The Golden Dragon (Opera Rara Festival), Albert Herring (Halle Opera, Teatr Wielki in Poznań) Cavalleria rusticana/Aleko (Opera North), Vanda (Opera Rara Festival), Manon Lescaut (Opera Holland Park), FaustRusalka, Hrabina (Teatr Wielki in Poznań), L’elisir d’amore (Silesian Opera), Turandot (Kraków Opera), La fanciulla del West (Teatr Wielki in Łódź). 

In 2023 she was awarded the Jan Kiepura Polish Musical Theatre Award in the “best opera director” category for her Rusalka, while her Turandot won as “best opera production of the year". As of January 2026 she holds the position of Artistic Director of Teatr Wielki in Poznań.
