Andrew Foster

Bass-Baritone

Andrew Foster-Williams has carved out an international career playing a range of operatic roles, be they villainous, noble, comedic or tragically complex, with vocal authority and dramatic insight. His Don Pizarro (Fidelio) at Philharmonie de Paris brought menace with vocal precision.  As the Four Villains (Les contes d’Hoffmann) at Opernhaus Zürich he demonstrated remarkable versatility, and to Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) at Opéra National de Lorraine he brought a fatal blend of charm and danger.  In the roles of Gunther (Götterdämmerung) and Kurnewal (Tristan und Isolde) at La Monnaie he demonstrated the dignity and inner conflict of Wagnerian figures. Equally compelling in roles demanding moral weight and emotional complexity, his Captain Balstrode (Peter Grimes) at Theater an der Wien and Opéra de Lyon embodied warmth and integrity and his Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande) at Theater Basel captured a brooding jealousy.   Outside the opera house, Andrew Foster-Williams has built an admirable concert profile and this season sees two of his signature pieces; Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius with Munich Philharmonic; and Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Andrew Foster-Wiliams’ discography includes The Dream of Gerontius with Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort & Players, released on Signum, winner the 2024 Gramophone Award for best recording in the choral category and the 2025 BBC Music Magazine Choral Award.
