Alessandro Fisher

Assistant Director / Language Coach

Raised in a bilingual Italo-English household, Alessandro went on to read Italian and German at Clare College, Cambridge. He then obtained a Masters in Vocal Studies from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and has since enjoyed a successful career as a performer - performing at the Royal Opera House, the Grange Festival, the Salzburg Festival, Glyndebourne and concert venues including the Wigmore Hall, the Barbican, the Bridgewater Hall and the Concertgebouw. It is his love for languages and communication that has always given focus to his work, whether it be on the operatic or recital stage. He believes that language is flexible and personal, and adding music, pitch, and staging to the mix - as well as navigating vocal “line” and technique - can sometimes only make things more complicated when it comes to trying to get a linguistic or stylistic point across. He therefore relishes the opportunity to help people gain a deeper understanding of the Italian language in preparation for a performance. To this end he has taken on Italian teaching roles at both the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and the Royal College of Music to share his passion for this wonderful language and all its beautiful idiosyncrasies with students at the beginning of their musical journey. He is thrilled to be back at Longborough this season following last year’s Barbiere di Siviglia, and hopes that his performance experience has allowed him to develop an understanding ear as well as given him an insight into translating linguistic advice into useful, practicable suggestions for artists.
