Job purpose

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Technician with a Stage Bias for the venue and season set up, production installations/strikes, show running and day to day maintenance of Longborough’s 2025 Opera Season which includes four mid to large-scale operatic productions.

The right candidate would be an experienced and knowledgeable Stage Technician who is enthusiastic, a team player, and a keen technical problem solver.

Principal Accountabilities:

The Senior Technician – Stage will:

  • Take responsibility for the day to day running of all Scenic Elements for all productions under the guidance of the Production Carpenter and/or Production Manager;
  • collaborate with the Production Carpenter to achieve the goals laid out by the Designer & Production Manager;
  • create and maintain all paperwork necessary for clear communication and the smooth running of performances;
  • Work on the install of all scenic elements alongside the Production Carpenter.
  • fulfil any performance related role across technical departments as the demands of the production may require, including Stage tracks and duty technician roles.
  • Maintain key production set and prop elements throughout the run.
  • Help manage and direct the 2x technicians as required, liaising with the Senior Technician – Lighting to ensure all production requirements are met to the highest standards.
  • Be a key team member and assist with any lighting, sound or stage management systems issues or turn around requirements as may be needed.
  • Be a designated first aider for the backstage area – training will be provided.
  • Abide by the rules of the Manager/venue at which the Manager is rehearsing or performing, as laid out in the relevant Health & Safety policies and procedures and Equal Opportunities policies

Person specification

Skills and Experience:

  • Be a skilled stage technician with demonstrable experience at scale, opera desirable but not essential.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, with a calm and positive mindset.
  • Ability to think logically, problem-solve and troubleshoot technical issues, working collaboratively with the wider technical team when required
  • Work well within a team as well as independently
  • A good sense of humour!
  • Experience working at height - MEWP experience IPAF licence desirable, but training will be given.

Further requirements and information

  • The successful candidate will be able to commit to punctuality throughout the period of employment bearing in mind that Longborough Festival Opera is not accessible by public transport.
  • Local accommodation during the season will be provided if required, along with a paid meal allowance for days worked on site and travel to and from Longborough at the start and end of the season.
  • The successful candidate must be able to fulfil the physical demands of the post, including (but not restricted to) working at height, in confined spaces, outdoors and in high noise environments.
  • Regular evening and weekend working is required during the season, and some occasional overnight working to facilitate production turnarounds.

This is a fixed term, freelance contract.
